Thoughts

I knew David for such a short amount of time but it was a pleasure and an honour to enter the home he shared with Jilly and get to know just a small part of him, travel, writing, poetry, films... It is clear to see how loved he was and I understand why.

Eulogy for David by Imi It is almost impossible to put into words all that could be said about David. Intelligent, witty, kind, challenging, brave and unwaveringly generous. Every way you look at it he was an exceptional and special person. I know I am not alone in feeling lucky to have known David. He lived an incredibly rich and full life, which was multi-faceted, but in all areas he remained the same David to all that knew him. Reliably himself, unapologetic about who he was, and rightly so. To me he was a father, but also a mother, collaborator, guide, best friend and in his own way was actually a real girls girl. This was so evident in his life long, unwavering and joyful connection with his sister Diane. And also in his enjoyment of gossip, chit chat, and shopping. But above all, in every walk of life, David was a tutor. I had the gift of being not only his favourite pupil but in his humble opinion his star student. The greatest gift he ever gave me was that he taught me that life is full of lessons, and that the bigger the challenge we face the more important the lesson to be learnt. Our ever wise David. In this moment more than ever, I value that perspective, that everything we face is an opportunity to learn and that’s means an opportunity to grow. I think that is how David came to be the person that he was, known for always having exactly the right thing to say, which is such an incredible skill that so few of us possess. Reflecting on that I have wondered, well what is the right thing to say in this moment. I have to highlight some of his accomplishments, Emmy nominated, BAFTA winner, contributing writer to playboy and most notably the greatest collector of nectar points the world has ever seen. And also I will say that we should cherish the joys, laugher and friendship we all shared with David. And what would David want me to say with these final words? He would wany to speak only of Jilly. Consistently herself, the heart of our home. The love that they shared was all, everything, and more than David ever could have asked for. So I will leave you with my thoughts of a life well lived, and a legacy of love and laughter that shall continue on unending.

What do you think has become of the young and old men? And what do you think has become of the women and children? They are alive and well somewhere, The smallest sprout shows there is really no death. And if ever there was it led forward life, and does not wait at the end to arrest it, And ceas'd the moment life appear'd. All goes onward and outward, nothing collapses, And to die is different from what any one supposed, and luckier. Walt Whitman, from 'Song of Myself ' 1892
